Economists say rising energy costs have put a perceptible drag on the economy throughout the summer. Americans are paying more to fill up their tanks, and businesses are seeing their fuel bills rise.

Crude oil prices topped a record $47 a barrel for part of the day in Wednesday's trading before slipping back down. NPR's Jim Zarroli reports.
