Dharavi: Heaven and Hell

A view of Dharavi from above.

A view of Dharavi from above.

In the tradition of "Apna Street," his previous NPR series on the pavement dwellers of Bombay, independent producer Julian Crandall Hollick returns with a three-part audio portrait of modern India.

Hollick's first stop is Dharavi, at the top of the island of Bombay, now known officially as Mumbai. Infamously called Asia's largest slum, Dharavi is home to half a million people, many of them migrants, all living on less than one square mile of reclaimed marshland.

Through his visit to a recycling center, a goldsmith and a busy pottery, Hollick finds that along the twisted lanes and back alleys of Dharavi, there is an industrious streak amid grinding poverty.
