The early 1900s was the peak of hog oilers — right when hog lice and hog cholera devastated livestock. Hog oilers, like the one on display at the Cowan Museum in Kenansville, were used by pigs to provide relief from insects and skin irritation.

It's a step up from a greasy rag hanging from a tree, which is another way to offer protection for pigs.
