North Carolina Renters, Colleges Grapple With Virus Turmoil

NCDPS

North Carolina residents will soon receive $175 million to help pay their rent and utility bills. The announcement Tuesday from Gov. Roy Cooper comes as many families grapple with the economic crisis fueled by the coronavirus. It also comes at a time when thousands of college students are leaving their dorms and returning home. Community colleges and public and private four-year colleges and universities have asked state lawmakers for more than $225 million to address budget shortfalls caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Testing has slowed in the state and cases are slightly up, which could force the state to remain in Phase 2 of its reopening plan.
