Nearly 300 acres of waterfront property along the Chowan River is now protected from development. The site near Edenton was the proposed location of a residential development known as Bal Gra Harbor. The Coastal Land Trust recently acquired the property and immediately transferred it to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. According to a release, the land features a half mile of waterfront, with a sandy beach and high bluffs. Its interior includes mixed pine hardwoods with small ephemeral ponds. The Bal Gra Harbor tract will be added to the 1,000 acre Salmon Creek State Natural Area. The property is the location of Site X, which archeologist believe was a pre-Colonial settlement by a splinter group of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. The Bal Gra Harbor property is close to a tract of land Bertie County intends to use as a recreation area and public water access.
