Mayors from six counties and towns along the proposed path of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline have endorsed the project, urging federal regulators to resume construction as soon as possible. The open letter released Thursday from the mayors of Garysburg, Smithfield, Roanoke Rapids, Four Oaks, Pembroke, and Selma, explained the importance of the project to revitalize the economy by supporting jobs and attracting new industries to the area. The letter said tax revenue from the pipeline would help support public schools, enhance community services, and lower the tax burden on citizens. Opponents of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline say the project would fail to meet the natural gas needs of the region and have environmental consequences. Dominion Energy of Virginia halted construction of the project in December for the review of two federal permits. The proposed 600-mile pipeline would carry natural gas from West Virginia, Virginia, and into North Carolina.
