A coastal researcher from the Crystal Coast was recently honored for his work on developing and improving ways to count fish populations.
Research fisheries biologist Nate Bacheler, with the NOAA Lab in Beaufort, was among 105 science and engineering professionals from around the country who received the Presidential Early Career Award. His research involves using underwater cameras to monitor fish species at reefs and implanting fish with transmitters to track their movements. Last week, Bacheler traveled to Washington D.C. to accept the award and meet President Obama.
“I love my job, I what I do. But it’s always nice to be appreciated for the hard work that you put in to do something like this. I certainly don’t need these type of awards to enjoy my job and to do a good job, but it’s just feedback that what I am doing is important and it’s making a difference in the world.”
Bacheler was nominated for the award in 2013. He was notified in February by email that he had won. I’m Jared Brumbaugh.
