A nearly 70-year-old swing bridge in Onslow County is being replaced. PRE’s Meredith Radford has more.
The bridge that connects Onslow Beach to Camp Lejeune over the Intracoastal Waterway is 67 years old, and one of the few swing bridges left in the state. The Jacksonville Daily News reports that it’s going to be replaced due to high maintenance costs and age. The new bridge will be a modern, single leaf drawbridge that is expected to increase operational efficiency, speed and reliability for mariners along the waterway.
Camp Lejeune Media and Digital Engagement Officer 1st Lieutenant Ace Padilla told the Jacksonville Daily News that they are making every effort to protect the waterway, marine life and ecosystems in the vicinity.
Additional traffic shouldn’t be a concern for drivers, but there may be impacts for mariners such as partial or full closure of waterway access. The bridge is expected to open to traffic in the fall of 2024.
