Bettye LaVette appears on Mountain Stage, recorded live at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, W.Va.
Based in Detroit, the R&B singer began her career with Atlantic Records in the early '60s and scored a Top 10 hit with her debut single, "My Man — He's a Lovin' Man." Through the years, LaVette continued to release albums on regional labels, and even joined the touring company of the Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar.
In the early 2000s, a French record label issued a previously unreleased disc that LaVette had recorded for Atlantic in 1972. Long-deserved accolades began to roll in, including a W.C. Handy Award for Comeback Blues Album of the Year. She released I've Got My Own Hell to Raise on a U.S. label, and her 2007 Drive-By Truckers collaboration The Scene of the Crime was nominated for a Grammy.
LaVette appears here with her own band, covering material by the likes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Bob Seger.
