Local Historians Reintroduce Region to Civil War Regiment

Black regiments in the Civil War are still a relatively obscure aspect of American History. Though many didn’t battle, these units were vital in keeping the union intact.

A group of residents based in Goldsboro have rediscovered one of those regiments – the 135th U.S. Colored Troops.

UPDATE -  Tuesday 4/14/15  7:50 am   The suspect in the shooting death of Wayne Community College employee Ron Lane has been apprehended.  20-year-old Kenneth Morgan Stancil III was arrested in Florida early Tuesday when he was spotted sleeping on the beach.  Officials are working to extradite Stancil to North Carolina to face charges.

The 2015 Wings Over Wayne Airshow will be held on May 16 thru 17 aboard Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro. The Airshow which is a free event to the public is being described as one of the biggest events in North Carolina this year. Mikel Peterson has more.

This week on the Down East Journal, a Goldsboro development group tries a variation on the “flash mob” theme to try and boost the presence of downtown businesses.  And, plans are being set to revitalize a depressed area of downtown New Bern.  The project would create local jobs and attract new businesses.  More on the revitalization of Five Points, this week on the Down East Journal, Friday at noon on PRE, Public Radio East.
