Researchers at East Carolina University in Greenville are enrolling people in a clinical trial for an experimental pill that was shown in another study to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death in people who had COVID-19. PRE’s Meredith Radford reports that the purpose of this study is to find out if the pill can prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in those who have not yet been infected.
CHAPEL HILL – A 20-member committee has been appointed in the search for a permanent chancellor at East Carolina University. A press release from ECU says interim UNC-system President William Roper and ECU Board of Trustees chair Vern Davenport made the announcement Friday. Davenport will chair the search committee that will make recommendations to the ECU Board of Trustees, which in turn will vote on candidates to recommend to Dr. Roper. Dr.
ECU’s interim chancellor has weighed in on a fight between the state and Vidant Health over appointments to Vidant’s board. East Carolina University released a letter signed by interim chancellor Dan Gerlach and Brody School of Medicine Dean Dr. Mark Stacy about the controversy. The Pitt County Board of Commissioners in May approved action that would end the UNC system’s nine appointments to the 20 member Vidant Health Medical Board. The state reacted, with the UNC system filing a lawsuit and a proposed state budget that would lower Medicaid reimbursement rates to the hospital.

In U-S News and World Report’s annual ranking of online education programs East Carolina University had two graduate programs with high rankings. ECU’s College of Nursing ranked fifth out of 96 masters of nursing programs in the country, while the Online Master of Business Administration program in the College of Business ranked 58th out of 171 programs nationwide.
ECU introduced Jeff Compher as the university’s new athletics director. Compher has been athletic director at Northern Illinois University for the past five years. He has past ties to North Carolina having served as an assistant athletic director at N-C State from 1986 to 1992 and was athletic director at Western Carolina from 2000 to 2004. He succeeds Terry Holland who announced his retirement last December. Compher signed a 5-year contract and will start his job May 1.
