Craven County’s board of education approved pay increases for employee groups who have not had a raise in at least 10 years at their meeting last week. PRE’s Meredith Radford has more.
One of the groups that Craven County’s superintendent — Dr. Wendy Miller — recommended a pay adjustment for were bus drivers. The current rate for bus drivers starts at $13 dollars an hour, with someone who’s been working for 36 years making a little over $15 an hour.
“Bus drivers are the first faces our students see each day and they ensure our students get to school safely. I’ve heard it said that bus drivers are the bookends to student success, since the academic day starts and ends with our bus drivers.”
This new pay scale for bus drivers starts at $15 an hour, with a 20 to 30 cent pay increase for each year of work, and takes effect Nov. 1st.
The board also approved an increase in the substitute teacher daily rate of pay from $91 dollars to $95 dollars for Effective Teacher Trained substitutes, and from $103 dollars to $110 dollars for licensed substitutes. Miller mentioned in the meeting that these new rates are the highest in the region.
Along with this, the board approved a $3,000 dollar bonus for teacher assistants who haven’t already received a bonus this year, which will be doled out over the next three years.
