The next phase of a bridge replacement project in Beaufort will open April 28th. The new Turner Street bridge will provide access from the Gallants Channel high rise directly into downtown Beaufort. Construction started in 2015. Despite numerous delays, Mayor Rett Newton says he’s glad the project is complete.
“There have been some significant inconveniences for folks so we’re just ready for this to get going. So we appreciate NCDOT and the job that they’ve done to make sure that the timeline… they really wanted this to be open before the first of May when our tourist season starts to open up.”
The town will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Turner St. Bridge on Saturday at 10 am.
“They’re still going to keep the Grayden Paul bridge open until they make sure that the traffic is flowing properly so we really don’t have a definitive time frame on when the Grayden Paul bridge will close permanently.”
The final traffic pattern for Highway 70 as well as the removal of the old drawbridge is expected to be in place by June.
