Photo ID Information Being Delivered To N.C. Voters

The State Board of Elections is notifying every residential household in North Carolina about the photo ID requirement for voting, which takes effect in 2020. In the coming days, information will be mailed to 4.7 million households explaining which types of photo ID are accepted, how voters can obtain a free Voter ID card, policy for voting without an acceptable photo ID, and qualifying exceptions to the requirement. It is the first of four educational mailings required by law.

In the November 2018 general election, 55.5% of the state's voters approved a referendum requiring voters to show a photo ID to vote. According to a news release, Session Law 2018-144, as amended by Session Laws 2019-22 and 2019-239, implements the new photo ID law. Legal challenges to the law are pending.

Beginning next year, voters in North Carolina will be asked to present a photo ID to vote. Voters who don't have an acceptable ID will be offered a provisional ballot. Voters who mail in their ballot will be asked to include a copy of their ID. The 2020 primary election is March 3. The general election is November 3.
