The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program will kick off the statewide campaign “Operation Firecracker” with an event aboard Camp Lejeune at 10 a.m. Operation Firecracker is a weeklong “Booze It & Lose It” campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving over the July 4 holiday.
“We are partnering with over 400 law enforcement agencies all across North Carolina to do increased patrols to decrease impaired driving and getting impaired drivers off the road in North Carolina,” said Mark Ezzel, the director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
In 2018, 10 fatalities occurred due to impaired driving during the July 4 holiday in North Carolina. This year, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program is collaborating with Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station for a community event Monday afternoon in downtown Jacksonville with drunken driving simulators, a blood alcohol testing mobile unit and other demonstrations.
