Plans to create New Bern’s largest park on a 55 acre donated tract of land were recently announced. According to a press release, the City’s Board of Alderman finalized a land donation agreement from Martin Marietta, the current owner of the property formerly used as a rock quarry. The 55 acre site, along South Glenburnie Road, completes a contiguous stretch of land and lakes totaling approximately 888 acres that will now be owned by New Bern. The City can now develop a master plan outlining multi-recreational and cultural opportunities as well as a proposed amphitheater. In exchange for the donated land, Martin Marietta has requested that all advertising, broadcasts and print materials describe the venue as “Martin Marietta Park” and feature their logo. They’ve also requested that the company’s aggregate products be used exclusively in construction and development of the site.
