NCDHHS reports almost 11,000 COVID-19 reinfections

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is now reporting data about COVID-19 reinfections.  According to information collected between March 1, 2020 and September 20, 2021, 10,812 people in the state tested positive for a second time after having a laboratory confirmed case at least 90 days prior. Of those reinfection cases, 200 occurred after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.  A total of 94 deaths were documented among people who were reinfected.  The number of reinfections increased with the surge of the more infectious Delta variant. The data show the majority of reinfections, 40% were among people ages 25 to 49. Overall, females were more likely to be reinfected. 60% of individuals who got COVID-19 a second time were white, while blacks and African Amercians accounted for 22% of reinfections.
