Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Nearing Completion

NCDOT

A new passenger ferry that will provide service between Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands is in the final stages of construction.

Workers with Swansboro-based U.S. Workboats have spent the last several months building the aluminum catamaran-style hull while the passenger cabin and pilot house were constructed separately.  Now, workers will be joining those components and installing engines and steering systems.  M/V Ocracoke Express will take 98-passengers from the Hatteras Inlet Terminal directly to the Silver Lake Terminal in the heart of Ocracoke.  The project is designed to ease visitor access to Ocracoke Island and alleviate summertime congestion on the ferry system's popular vehicle ferry.  US Workboats expects to deliver the vessel in September.
