Event Description

Thanks to a joint initiative of the National Geographic Society and the California Academy of Sciences, everyone can document and identify their observations in nature – and at the same time - contribute to biodiversity science. Cypress Group members and the public can learn more about this initiative, called “iNaturalist,” at the May 10 Cypress Group virtual program. The program begins on Zoom at 7 p.m., Monday, May 10. Now one of the world’s most popular nature apps, “iNaturalist” helps everyone to identify the plants and animals around them. The app is used by over a million scientists and naturalists. However, even ordinary people can use the app to record and share their observations by date and location, which creates research-quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. The program features Meredith Morgan, the natural sciences education specialist for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. She will provide an orientation on the use of the iNaturalist phone app. Her presentation will be followed by a second one by Jack Spruill and Clay Coor. They will discuss the use of the app for an ongoing citizen science project to document species diversity at a 300-acre farm Spruill owns in Roper, North Carolina. Coor will also discuss the cultivation of figs and other conservation efforts at the farm. The Spruill farm already has an iNaturalist citizen-science forum set up to document the biodiversity within the boundaries of the Spruill Farm Conservation Project. It is designed for visitors to record, share, enjoy, and study the wildlife and natural history there. A second "sub-project" has been set up to document the trees and woody shrubs at the farm. The public is welcome to attend this and all monthly programs of the Sierra Club Cypress Group.
