Respect for Marriage Act passes first hurdle

The U.S. Senate’s version of the Respect for Marriage Act, advocated by North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, passed its first hurdle on Wednesday.

The act would codify same-sex and interracial marriages, cleared the 60-vote hurdle to merit consideration by the full Senate without the threat of filibuster.

If the Senate passes the bill with the bipartisan amendment, it would return to the House for another vote before it could go to President Joe Biden to sign.

A final vote in the Senate is not expected until after Thanksgiving.
