OCEARCH has begun its southbound expedition, bringing white shark research off the coast of the southeast U.S.

Over the past seven years, OCEARCH has visited the region annually to learn more about white sharks but this is the organization’s first visit during November and December, when they sharks arrive in their overwintering habitat.

Biologists will be gathering blood and muscle tissue, which they say will help scientists fill gaps in hormone data and get a better look at how hormone levels change throughout the year.

The range of habitat that white sharks live in during the winter stretches from Cape Hatteras to as far south as the Florida Keys and into the Gulf of Mexico.
