Help PRE Create A Living Shoreline

Eastern North Carolina is known for great public radio and beautiful natural resources. Now your pledge  to PRE  can support both. For every pledge of support  PRE receives between now and March 19th five spartina or smooth cord grass plants will be given to the NC Coastal Federation Living Shoreline Project.

During its Spring Membership Drive Public Radio East is celebrating its 25th year of service to Eastern North Carolina by helping the NC Coastal Federation create a Living Shoreline on Jones Island in the White Oak River in Swansboro. In May Public Radio East staff and volunteers will use the cord grass to help construct the living shoreline surrounding parts of Jones Island. .

What is a living shoreline? One of Eastern North Carolina's most treasured resources is our shoreline. The region's diverse coastal marsh system provides critical nursery habitat for many recreational and commercial fisheries and provide direct and indirect food sources for countless animals. The planting of smooth cord grass along the water's edge creates a living shoreline that can better absorb storm water and wave energy and provide flood and erosion control.

Public Radio East is proud to be a part of Eastern North Carolina for the past 25 years providing this region with in-depth news, intelligent commentary and enriching cultural entertainment.

Please join us in preserving our natural resources for generations to come by making your pledge today

Calling All Dawns by composer Christopher Tin, brings together some of the finest performers from around the world. Over 200 musicians contribute, including  Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,  a Maori mens chorus, percussionists Greg Ellis and the On EnsembleThe Soweto Gospel Choir, medieval superstars Anonymous 4, the Portuguese fado sensation Dulce Pontes, Iranian vocalist Sussan Deyhim and Japanese pop star Lia.

Composed of 12 songs in 12 different languages, the song-cycle is structured in three broad movements: day, night and dawn--corresponding to life, death and rebirth. The lyrics come from sources as diverse as religious texts like the Torah and Bhagavad Gita, to ancient Persian and Japanese poetry, to lyrics by contemporary writers. The message of the album is that we are interconnected as a people; and despite our differences in culture, religion and belief, we all share the same common human experiences.

The album is also a survey of many of the great world vocal traditions, including: African call-and-response, opera, medieval chant, Irish keening, Arabic and Indian Carnatic improvisation, and many more. All these styles are seamlessly woven together through Tin's lush, Romantic orchestrations. The album was recorded at London's famous Abbey Road Studios.
