It was a beautiful day on Monday, June 15th. The kind of day made for building an oyster reef. Public Radio East staffers, volunteers, and the NC Coastal Federation group spent about 5 hours constructing a 150 foot sill along the shore of Jones Island in the White Oak River in Swansboro. The sill, the basis for a living oyster reef, consisted of one layer of sandstone gravel encased in plastic net bags and two layers of net bagged oyster shells.
