Megen George

Megen George joined the PRE on-air staff in May of 2003.  Over the past few years she has served as a host of All Things Considered (ATC) and as a feature news reporter and producer.  In Spring of 2006 Megen was named News Director of Public Radio East and given the task of expanding Public Radio East's regional news coverage.

A Kentucky native, Megen's interest in radio began when as a student at Morehead State University, she began volunteering at the school's public radio station, WMKY.  Although she majored in art, she quickly became drawn to the work she was doing at the station.

"The atmosphere was extremely well supervised and as my interest in the process grew, I committed to more frequent hours at the station. I also added an Electronic Media Minor to my course work," Megen said. Despite her added course work, she was adamant that her successes, "came through hands-on experience at the station, much more so than from assigned course work."

While at Morehead State, Megen received numerous awards from both the Public Radio News Directors, Inc., and the Kentucky Associated Press, including 1st place awards for Best Student Newscast from both organizations in 2002.

In May of 2003, Megen arrived in New Bern to begin her duties after leaving Washington D.C., where she had just completed a four-month internship with NPR's All Things Considered. While at NPR, she assisted hosts and producers in show preparation, researched stories, and contributed to the show by generating story ideas and booking guests.

Since joining the staff at PRE Megen was named North Carolina Associated Press Rookie of the Year in 2003, as well as North Carolina Associated Press awards for Best News Writing in 2004 and Best General News, Best Sports Program, Best Health Report, and Best Series in 2005.

In addition to Megen's duties behind the microphone at PRE, she has produced a significant number of full-feature news stories for PRE listeners. Her very first assignment was to create follow-up features on the West Pharmaceutical Plant explosion in Kinston.  Since then, Megen has reported on the North Carolina high school dropout rate, the history of the Tuscarora Indians in Eastern North Carolina, and the debate over a proposed naval outlying landing field.  Megen has also produced various series including commentary from breast cancer survivors as well as the ENC Believes essay series.  You may also recognize her voice during live hurricane coverage and as the regular host of the weekly news magazine The Down East Journal.

When asked to choose what type of story she prefers, Megen says, "I'll always choose the human interest story over the hard news. Of course it's important to do both, but my interests lie with the people stories behind the headlines."
